Even this early in the season, just a handful of days after the New York shows started, some key trends are emerging. All of these seemed to find their way onto the Tommy Hilfiger AW11 catwalk.
Ponchos and capes,
longer-length skirts, mannish tweed trousersuits, shearling gilets...… If you feel like starting a shopping list, you could do a whole lot worse than base it on this show. Inspired by the idea of a "1970s rockstar girlfriend", it was a luxuriously retro affair - a bohemian, feminine interpretation of menswear classics, irreverent and unstudied, with some truly standout pieces. A navy suede short-sleeved parka with toggle fastenings, a beaded chunky cable-knit sweater with a roll neck, a burgundy below-the-knee skirt worn with a casual sweatshirt: it's hard not to be seduced by this kind of functional, preppy simplicity. Add in high-heeled loafers and floppy hats and the season is summed up pretty perfectly. A sure-fire hit, whatever trends may appear later.
