Fug or Fab or YAWN: Eva Longoria Parker and Kate Beckinsale
Back in 2008, when Eva L-P was at Cannes, I wrote of her froofy white outfit, “I just can’t help wondering if Eva thinks that every time she sets foot in France, she needs to remind us all of her lavish wedding.”
Welcome to 2010, a.k.a., Same As It Ever Was:
This, I think, is a prettier version of the same theme — it’s more understated, for one thing, which sounds loopy about a dress with that many ruffles, but consider the wearer and her history. In fact, that is my primary beef: Don’t you feel like, even though we’ve never seen this before, we’ve TOTALLY seen this before? I think these dresses are her crutch. It used to be tiny sequined tank dresses in garish colors, and now it’s Giant! Ruffled! Skirts! So in some ways it doesn’t matter how nice it is; it feels played out even though it’s new .
I feel the same way about Kate Beckinsale:
When does Kate Beckinsale go anywhere NOT in prom hair, a tight bodice, and/or a parade float’s worth of tulle? That’s one of the reasons we so rarely feature her (and, a sentiment it turns out I’ve expressed in part before). It becomes hard to judge impartially, and really boring from a writing standpoint, when my only reaction is, “AGAIN. OF COURSE. OBVIOUSLY.” I want her to trade places with Britney Spears for a day. You know? Make us all feel ALIVE AGAIN.
