Richard Chai’s otherwise grey runway was given the pink slip by newcomer Charlotte Free. The Los Angeles native is only 18 and already in popular demand, despite this being her first Fashion Week foray. We’re excited about this one. She looks like she could totally beat us up…Not that we condone violence on the runway. Cheeky young thing, isn’t she?
It’s terribly apropos for this week’s inspiration board to take direction from the 1950’s noir classic Sunset Blvd. The Oscars are this Sunday, and you can’t celebrate the movies without the ultimate film about the movies, right? Once upon a time movie queen Norma Desmond (played by actress Gloria Swanson) longs for a Hollywood comeback, and will stop at nothing to reclaim her star. The glamour and drama follow Norma wherever she goes, most of all in her outfits. The costume makes the actress, because she can’t be on without them. The flowing capes, opulent jewels and gorgeous gowns of the silver screen era always get the comeback and the close-up. Norma, however…

When I was in kindergarten we had to color a picture of Little Red Riding Hood. I colored the skirt red and the top orange. I was so pleased because I had stayed in the lines, that I went up to show it to Mrs. Penner, my kindergarten teacher. I was crushed by her snippy response: "Orange just does NOT go with red." Whether that is true or not, I still get a visceral reaction to pairing these colors together, 52 years later!
