I was commissioned to illustrate face charts and perfume bottles for the Beauty Section of Bloomingdale’s August Catalogue
I was asked if they could be fairly simple line drawings (from the shoulders up) as they would end up as face charts for a makeup artist to apply the makeup to. We thought it would be nice to have some loose lines for hair and fashion elements, but generally they should be kept minimal and not too solid so as not take away from the products. Some examples of face charts were then sent my way – I absolutely love them and their slightly 80stastic vibe

Laura Mercier

Face Chart

The Brief
I needed to illustrate 5 vendor face charts.  I used some vendor pics as a reference for the amount of makeup that would eventually be applied. Referencing the brands
I looked at runway shots for examples, keeping their general style/attitude and my linear style though out.
Shiseido was more about the eyes, and I referenced the Michael Kors Fall show for styling.

Lancome
First Sample Layout
So armed with all that info I did a sample layout page. Lancome was a full face look, a bit dramatic.
Laura Mercier was a full face look, but more about the eyes (lips are nude).
Dior was full face as well, but also about the eyes (a smoldering, “silverscreen” look).

The lines were kept very minimal and loose so as not to take away from the products that were going to be used
we were going to try and show nail polish but the hand didn’t really work
Here is the final – it looks so good once the makeup has been applied
