directed the big-screen adaptation of "Hairspray," confirmed Hough's casting via Twitter.
"Yes, it's true. Julianne Hough was beyond brilliant in her audition, and will be rocking the role of Sherrie Christian in #rockofagesmovie," Shankman wrote.
The role of Sherrie in the first Los Angeles production of "Rock of Ages" was originated by Broadway star and fellow country singer Laura Bell Bundy.
"Rock of Ages" will be Hough's second leading role in a musical movie. She also scored the part of Ariel Moore in the upcoming "Footloose" remake, set to hit theaters in October.
"Rock of Ages" is scheduled to start shooting in May.
