Here is a security issue most of us have not yet considered: pictures taken from our smart phones can reveal our exact location. No, we are not referring to the background images—obviously, if you are pictured standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, most people can figure out you are in Paris. We are referring to something far more sinister: Geotagging.
geotagging
According to ICanStalkU.com, when a smartphone takes a picture, the phone stamps the picture with metadata that includes the latitude and longitude of where the picture was taken. If you post that picture on Facebook or Twitter, the entire world can then see exactly where you are, just from the photo’s properties. All anyone needs to see your location is a graphic editor.

If using the camera on iPhone, you may see a message that says Camera would like to use your current location. If you see this message, click Don’t Allow.

To make sure the iPhone is not geotagging, click Settings. Then, choose General. From the General list, choose Location Services.

The Location Services menu lists every app on your iPhone that has location tracking ability. To keep your phone’s pictures from geotagging, turn the camera’s location setting to Off.

Keep in mind most of us will never encounter a stalker who cares enough to track our location by our geotagged pictures. However, for personal safety, it is a good idea to turn off geotagging—at least for the photos we post on social networking sites.
